12TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “LORD, DO NOT CARE, WE ARE PERISHING?”

BY: Fr. Justus Oruh

Mark 4: 35–41

(a) I recall vividly during the COVID-19, during the prayer and blessing, “Urbi er Orbi, the Pope continually repeated this prayer of the disciples, – “Lord, do you not care we are perishing?” which was at the time so appropriate. This was how the disciples once prayed. The reaction of Christ to the prayer is consoling, “Quiet! Be still!”- and there was a great calm. This incident happened as Christ was traveling in a boat with them. Suddenly, violent storms and waves were hitting hard against them. They were tossed about by waves. The disciples were full of worry and fear, but Christ himself was able to sleep peacefully and deeply in the midst of these storms, even with a pillow in a coner. Could we we imagine this serenity, the calmness and tranquility of heart in the midst of storms?

Life is like a journey across the sea. Sometimes we sail good, sometimes we meet storms and turbulences. Sometimes our heads is full of worries about our homes, family and marriages. The poor pass through difficulties in the bad economy and bad government. Sometimes we cannot sleep at night because of all the insecurities. People killed here and there. Does the Lord not care we are perishing? In such situations, we should not give up and lose faith, but realize that God is with us in the boot even in the times of storms and troubles. The Faith and the conviction that God is always with us gives us a calm and serene heart. God does not actually sleep. In this Faith, anxiety and fear are better handled. That was why Christ asked them: “Why are you so terrified? Do you not yet have Faith?”

We know what sicknesses and depressions fear and worries could cause us. The the worries and fears do not bring us any good, which is why Christ tells us, “be still” be calm”. Instead of only worrying, complaining and dying unter pressures in these situations we cannot control, we turn the complaints to prayers, turning to Christ saying; “Lord, do you not care we are perishing?” In prayers such as these are calmness and tranquility of soul restored even admit troubles beyond us. Christ journeys with you in Life. Be calm!
