HOMILY OF FRIDAY 11TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: YOUR TREASURE

Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Matthew 6:19-23

An interviewer once asked the famous singer Bob Marley, “Are you a rich man?” Bob Marley responded, “What do you mean by rich?” The interviewer elaborated, “You have a lot of possessions? A lot of money in the bank?” Marley then asked, “Possessions make you rich? I don’t have that kind of richness. My richness is life!” According to Marley, “Some people are so poor, all they have is money.” A proverb says, “He is rich who is satisfied with what he has.”

The pursuit of material wealth often consumes much of our time and energy, leaving little or no time to care for our souls. Jesus wisely says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:19-23). Material treasures such as money, property, cars, and other luxuries of life are good, but excessive attachment to these earthly treasures can distract us from pursuing the greatest treasure, which is eternal life. A spiritual crisis looms whenever possessions possess us. Nothing and no one should possess us other than God.

We should examine our priorities and see if we prefer gold more than God, or if anyone or anything other than God possesses our souls. We can ask ourselves the following questions: Where do we invest our energy, power, talent, time, and resources? Are we more attracted to spiritual things than to material things? Do we find worldly treasures more precious than eternal treasures?
