HOMILY OF FRIDAY 11TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE WILL YOUR HEART BE ALSO”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Kings 11:1-4, 9-18, 20; Psalm 131(132):11-14, 17-18; Matthew 6:19-23

Storing up treasure is in the DNA of humans. We like accumulating; sometime wisely, but quite often, foolishly, and to no reasonable end. One’s value orientation, to a large extent, determines what and where one’s treasures are, and how they are weighted over, against and above other realities in life. A true Christian value orientation is one that is not strictly earthbound; one whose horizons includes eternity, life after death. Where do you want to be when you die? Your treasure should be directed and built toward the goal articulated by your response to that simple question. Not to have such a life-after-death perspective on life is to be without in-sight, the outcomes of which are blindness and darkness.

Many of the things to which humans attach value are ephemeral and fleeting, truly valueless, and the earlier we develop a sense of detachment from such entities, no matter how much they advance our daily lives, the better. They may be useful but not enduring values. These include money, fame, power, influence and the like. The first reading today demonstrates how useless these could turn out to be, since they control us when we overly desire to possess them. They actually possess us first, make us develop a disregard for God and humans, and then turn us mad in an effort to reinforce our desire for them as sources of security, before destroying us. To put our treasure in such temporary securities is self-destructive. If our true home is in heaven, and these things have no place in heaven, then we must focus on values in this life that would aid our journey to our true home in heaven.

Lord, rid us of the wrong use of our resources and direct our hearts according to your will. Amen.
