HOMILY OF SATURDAY 11TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “DO NOT WORRY ABOUT TOMORROW; YOUR HOLY FATHER KNOWS YOUR NEEDS”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

2 Chron 24:17-25; Psalm 88(89):4-5, 29-34; Matt 6:24-34

The reason people store up earthly treasures, amass wealth greedily, steal from others and the public selfishly, and hoard and guard their loot with their own lives, is fear: Fear of the future; fear of the unknown. Such fear leads to idolatry as we begin to deify the resources and powers that we have constituted into securities to insure the future and the unknown. The only insurance against the future and the unknown is God. The God, who holds the future, the God of the unknown, is the one we have as our Father.

Jesus encourages us today to entrust ourselves and all our concerns to Him and simply live freely and courageously. Jesus asks a rhetorical question to which every heart must respond: “Which of you, by worrying, can add a cubit to his span of life?” No matter how much we gather and store, we cannot buy death. In fact, hoards actually make death miserable because they rob us of the grace of final perseverance that helps us focus on God as we make that last journey. Plus! We take nothing with us when we go; we are even incapable of further choices/decisions and only fair as well as we are treated by others. Jesus enjoins us to trust more in divine providence, which only can provide for us here and in the hereafter, and worry less. Acknowledging whatever providence God gives to us, we must put all that we have and are to use according to God’s bidding, not only for our own good but for the common good of all, especially the marginalized and suffering poor. That is what gives us equity in heaven. Medically, if you don’t stop worrying, you actually provide opportunities for different diseases and cut your life short. Let go, and let God.

Lord, give us the grace and courage to live freely and trustingly, no matter where life’s journey takes us. Amen.
