HOMILY OF TUESDAY 10TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE THE SALT… LIGHT OF THE WORLD”

St. Barnabas, Apostle & Martyr
Acts 11:21-26, 13:1-3; Psalm 97(98):1-6; Matt 5:13-16 (10:7-13)
Following the beatitudes, Jesus addresses us directly, to seriously employ those wonderful virtues (beatitudes) to positively preserve, flavor, transform, illuminate, direct, renew, and sustain our world. Failure to truly imbibe those values is a failure in discipleship, as, indeed, either our saltiness has lost its taste or our light is dimmed or extinguished. These elements are further underscored in the particular gospel for the feast of the Apostle Barnabas (Matt 10:7-13).

There the Lord, while sending the disciples on their mission, enjoined them to trust in divine providence, and not be distracted with efforts to make personal provision for themselves. More importantly, he urged selflessness and generosity in applying themselves to the mission, for, “freely they received, freely they must give.” St. Barnabas, whom we celebrate today, was a generous, welcoming, compassionate, patient, selfless and zealous servant of the gospel, through whom St. Paul got a soft landing in the early Church. He was definitely and truly salt and light in the life of St. Paul. He showed the way to St. Paul and gave him the shield and protection he needed at the time. Through their exemplary life as disciples and missionaries, we are also told that it was in Antioch, while they were ministering there that the disciples were first called “Christians.” May God recreate amongst us many more disciples like St. Barnabas.
Lord, send me and give me the grace to bring you and your word wherever you send me. Amen.
