HOMILY OF TUESDAY 11TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY OF TUESDAY 11TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 Kings 21:17-29; Psalm 50(51):3-6, 11, 16; Matt 5:43-48

The Lord’s ways are deep and beyond human comprehension. In one swoop, God was spitting out fire and disaster upon Ahab and His household, but almost immediately God’s merciful heart melts for him, for repenting. God never sleeps and nothing is hidden from Him. God still executed the punishment announced by the prophet, having spared Ahab the pain of seeing it happen. Humans don’t grant such reprieve. God’s ways are different. Vengeance is truly His: despite giving Ahab a break, Naboth’s blood was still avenged a hundredfold, as Ahab’s dynasty was obliterated and Jezebel knew no peace: God’s mercy and justice in focus.

Jesus’ last teaching in the antithetical series invites us to love as God does. God is our model; loving everyone, indiscriminately and completely. Jesus then rounds up the section with a firm invitation to model our ways after God himself; correspondingly, that is how our righteousness gets to surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees. We are called into communion with God in love and holiness of life. Psalm 51 is an excellent prayer for forgiveness; it effectively expresses our guilt and sorrow before God. Use it often, even if you are not as bad as Ahab or Jezebel.

Lord, show me your love and mercy; and teach the same. Amen.
