HOMILY OF WEDNESDAY 10TH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “THE MAN WHO KEEPS THEM AND TEACHES THEM…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 Kings 18:20-39; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 4-5, 8, 11; Matt 5:17-19

The contest on Mt. Carmel between Elijah and the 450 prophets of Baal was one of my favorite bible stories as a teenager. Beyond reaffirming God’s supremacy and uniqueness, I found it graphic, hilarious, and yet memorably constructed to reinforce the message untainted. Our God is faithful, constant, never sleeps, never too busy for us, always patient, but also decisive when we decide to be unyielding. The incident underpins the common-man adage: “one with God is majority.” May God grant us the resilient courage of Elijah, reinforce our conviction that we are never alone, and turn our hearts from the idols (Baals) that distract our single-mindedness.

In the gospel, Jesus admonishes and invites us to hold firm to God’s ordinances in totality, not picking and choosing on our own terms. The obligation is twofold: first, keeping God’s law and living by His word; second, handing on that virtue to future generations by making God known to them (our children and wards) and teaching them to observe God’s commandments. How we respond has corresponding consequences. The usual question is: which commandments? Jesus says: One Commandment; loving God above all else and loving your neighbor “as I have loved you.”

Lord, teach me your law. Amen.
