MONDAY HOMILY OF 11TH WEEK OF THE ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: OFFER THE WICKED MAN NO RESISTANCE?

BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor

1 Kings 21:1-16; Matt. 5:38-42

Today’s readings seem to present us with two extremes. We have Ahab whose greed was so severe, he couldn’t see anything wrong in killing an innocent man and taking over the inheritance of the man’s forefathers. Then we have Jesus telling us in the gospel reading not to offer the wicked man any resistance? This is intolerable language; it’s difficult to accept. Well, maybe not.

Friends, this world is full of people like Ahab and Jezebel; those who would stop at nothing to get what they want. But again, Jesus reminds us not to be like them. He doesn’t mean we should not resist evil, or make every effort to preach against evil people, he rather means that we should not be too concerned about vengeance. We should always go the extra mile to be more understanding in dealing with evil people.

Good day dear. God bless your week ahead!
