HOMILY THEME: CALLED BY GOD!

Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts of the Apostles 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66, 80

The celebration of John the Baptist’s birth has been observed since the early days of Christianity, and it was one of the oldest Christian feasts in existence. In the fourth century, the feast day of John the Baptist was already widely celebrated throughout the Christian world. In 1748, Pope Benedict XIV issued the apostolic constitution “Coelestis Pastor,” which established the universal celebration of the feast on June 24th for the entire Latin Church. Pope Benedict XIV recognised the significance of this feast day and saw it as an opportunity to promote devotion to John the Baptist, who was an important figure in the history of salvation.

Today therefore, we celebrate the birth of St John the Baptist; one of the few saints who has two celebrations in our Liturgical Calendar; one marking his birth and the other his death. John recognised Jesus before he was born; he was the first to have a different name in his family, at the mention of which, speech returned to his Father. He fearlessly preached repentance to everyone. And when the time was right, he let go, and pointed Jesus out to his disciples. Friends, God has created us for some purpose. Birthdays should be occasions to thank God for the wonder of our being and refocus on our paths and purposes. This is so much better than going clubbing or uploading obscene pictures and videos on social media. May God give us the grace to understand the difference. Amen.

St John the Baptist, pray for us!

Good morning dear. God bless your day ahead.
