SATURDAY HOMILY OF THE 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: HEART OF GOD’S CHILD

BY: Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

1 Kings 19:19-21; Psalm 15(16):1-2, 5, 7-10; Matt 5:33-37

Jezebel was chasing Elijah and the prophet ran to God for help. God did not give Elijah a single word of comfort. He rather sent him to anoint Elisha as his successor. Today, we see Elijah joyfully undertaking that task. He is not worried that God is replacing him. He does not ignore the message and mission. He obeys promptly and joyfully. He is not jealous or envious of the replacement. He accepts the will of God and trains the new prophet for God.

Irrespective of the power of Elijah, he still respects God’s guidance and ordinance. He accepts God’s will and fully obeys it. Such is the character of a true child of God. He does not fight God or get worried with God’s decisions. He knows it is okay for God to lift other people and he welcomes that without sorrow or pain.
Are you a child of God? Are you afraid to pave the way for others in accordance with the will of God? Do you feel worried when God lifts another great personality either as your replacement or support? A true child of God accepts God’s appointment and celebrate the people God elevates. Like Elijah, may we allow God to lift others through our instrumentality.
